Pietermaritzburg, the administrative capital city of KwaZulu Natal, is the gateway to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Mountains World Heritage Site. Surrounded by hills, bisected by the Duzi River, and often shrouded in morning mist.
Pietermaritzburg offers an abundance of things to do for entertainment with Mountain biking, road biking, white water rafting, Gameparks, scenic places and the Midlands Meander gastronomic delights and arts and crafts close by. This heritage city also offers cultural interest with its origin as one of the first cities of the province and close association with the stories of Dingaan, Piet Retief and Gert Maritz. The city has ties to the Voortrekkers; and the Church of the Vow can be found at the Msunduzi Voortrekker’s Museum. The city also boasts ties to Nelson Mandela and his capture nearby; Mahatma Ghandi and the start of his struggle and the Hindu Festival; the English left their mark on the city with the Dellville Wood Weeping Cross, Macrorie House Museum, the Tatham Art Gallery and numerous Victorian buildings and houses to visit. The Pietermaritzburg City Hall is the highest Victorian structure in the Southern Hemisphere.
Pietermaritzburg is also the start of two of the most challenging sporting events in South Africa, the Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg and the Hansa Powerade Duzi Canoe Marathon held in January each year.The city is centrally situated between Durban, the Drakensberg and KwaZulu-Natal’s game reserves on the main N3 Highway between Johannesburg and Durban. Pietermaritzburg is approximately 78 kilometres west of Durban.
